Summertime 1989, and a battered Ford Cortina hurtles south for the start of a long road trip from Scotland back to the home counties. The perfect setting for a boredom-induced back seat battle, an incident was avoided by a clever distraction in the form of a detour to Halifax. Or, more specifically, to Eureka… a science museum for children.
… embarrassing as it is to admit, this Eureka – “designed to inspire children to find out about themselves and the world around them through 100s of hands-on exhibits” – was more exciting to me back then than the rest of the holiday put together.
Something about being able to get stuck in, to experiment, and to learn from getting things right and wrong makes sense. Or as Confucius, some 2000 years ago, more articulately said… “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand”. Couple this concept with digital, and the possibilities are vast. It’s only a tiny part of what eBee does, but creating virtual learning environments is exactly what eBee was doing when our paths crossed and exactly what made me think that working with them was right for me.
Prior to joining eBee I spent the last 10 years in healthcare, in one form or another. Being annoyingly indecisive, I took a year out after school to figure out what on earth to do next; the majority of this year was spent knee deep in gels with a Gilson pipette never far from hand, looking into vaccine development at GSK. Fascinating, but not for me long-term.
Then followed a four year Pharmacy degree, including a random semester at a Poison Control Center in San Francisco (crayons are remarkably harmless if eaten, fyi), and a year completing my professional training at some of the leading teaching hospitals in London.
As a qualified pharmacist I plied my trade for a few years in the community sector, opening my eyes to the multiple health challenges that society faces today, before moving into healthcare communications with a three and a half year stint in Medical Education, and a further year in advertising after that.
The aim is to use these experiences to support the eBee ethos, which is all about bringing insight driven innovation to the healthcare arena. Why do something as you’ve done it before, if it can be done better and in an original and interesting way?
