Japanese cuisine was on to something way before the western world hijacked and named it. We eat with our eyes first. No more lumps of mash, Oliver Twist style to be dumped onto your plate. Food is now carefully constructed in a delicate tower. But no, I’m not eBee’s chef. I’m making a point, bear with me.
We take in everything with our eyes first. I think I felt that by intuition before I could get all philosophical about it. Decorating my notebooks, my desk surrounded with references and notes of pretty things. Always face the window while working, to be able to see nature, the best designer yet.
That’s how it all started for me. One day I was no longer the girl who likes to draw. I was a designer. The next day I realised designs can move and interact so I ditched paper for screen, for good.
It could have all ended there, but I came to London to learn more. There is always something new to learn. I learned my best lesson yet, back at LCC. Making a pretty cover is just a small part of the term DESIGN. Yes, its nice to have something attractive to look at, but if you don’t know what to do with it, it will just sit in the corner of the room and gain a thin layer of dust.
Design, for me, is people first and foremost. I am fascinated by how we approach something new, or familiar; how we hold a mouse or flick fingers on a glossy touch screen. I learn from facial expressions what they expect to happen if they dare to click this button or hover over that panel.
Design is to make it simple. And fun. And memorable. Make it good enough of an experience you would like to come back and try it again. Make it challenging for you so you get curious to see what else can you do with it.
It’s a process. It is happening every day. And my friends at eBee make sure I learn something new almost every day. I love it. I love my job.
